| Details: | Markham Launches Urban Design Excellence Awards Seeks nominations to celebrate achievements MARKHAM, ON — Markham is seeking nominations for its 2010 Design Excellence Awards. The competition recognizes and promotes excellence in urban design. Nominations for this municipal-wide program are sought from architects, designers, planners, landscape architects, engineers, developers, consultants, owners and the general public. All projects must be located within Markham and built prior to September 17, 2010. All types of development are eligible – including industrial, commercial, residential, recreational, heritage, street improvements, parks and public space. Submissions may include single buildings, open spaces, structures, additions or exterior renovations. The Design Excellence Awards are presented during each term of Council, with the last ones awarded in 2006. Reviewing this year's submissions is a six-member jury including a member of Markham Council, design professionals and Markham staff. Jury members include the Chair of Markham Development Services Committee; Brigitte Shim, Principal, Shim-Sutcliffe Architects; Ian Chodikoff, Editor, Canadian Architect; Mark Sterling, Principal, Sweeny Sterling Finlayson&Co Architects Inc.; John Hillier, Principal DuToit Allsop Hillier Ltd.; Jim Baird, Commissioner of Development Services, with Town Architect Ronji Borooah as the Professional Advisor. All submissions, due by September 17, 2010, must include a CD containing images that show the project's significance, function, aesthetics, context and execution.
